Calm instead of the Storm
...pretty much sums up Atlantic Hurricane Season 2009. After Katrina, I thought the US was supposed to be pounded relentlessly annually with big and bad storms similar in magnitude of Katrina that numbered into the teens because of Global Warming Climate Change <insert flavor of the month impending doom scenario here>.

from USA Today:

"The 2009 Atlantic hurricane season ended Monday without a hurricane landing on U.S. shores and with the fewest named storms in 12 years, according to the National Hurricane Center."

Whew. Luckily, scientists can be wrong sometimes. (Or make up data too, but that's another topic **cough** **cough** climategate **cough** **cough**). Speaking of which, if the media spent just 10% of the effort researching the allegations of Climategate that they put into A**m L*****t or Tiger Woods or their constant bleating of adoration for BHO...but maybe they're afraid of that the data really has been fudged.

Tiger Beat media strikes again!

(and let's not forget snow in Houston today. Earliest snowfall on record there. lol)

Update (12/08) - is it me or does it seem like there are more doom and gloom news stories about climate change lately? It could just coincide with the large carbon footprint going on in Copenhagen or, more likely, this is the media's coordinated response to the Climategate emails.

Global Warming Reduces Demand for Electricity
Yes, that's right. From today's Providence Business News:

Cold, rain cut N.E. electricity demand

Since AGW causes cooler temperatures, rain, and pretty much anything that used to naturally occur (hence the need for the repackaging of the terminology to Climate Change as a CYA; when something doesn't sell, repackaging sometimes helps), we can logically conclude that global, er, Climate Change has cut electricity consumption in N.E.

However, it may cause my electric consumption to increase. Given that it was 74/54 yesterday (avg. is 83/62), I may have to start turning on the heat at night.

Where Has Summer Been?

Since June 1, Boston has only seen four days above 80F. Wow. Locally, we're a little better; three so far in July and eleven in June; June 16 is the first day where the average high should be 80 and we've only seen 80 or better eleven days since.

Cold
...very cold. So far, nearly every day has been below normal this month. Take a look.

It's not just local, either: Deep Freeze Chills Florida

UK's Met Office sees cold winter continuing

Abnormally cold winter among issues facing utilities (Iowa)

Northwest MT cold means bigger energy bills
(really? who woulda thunk)

MA, RI take on more snow, cold temperatures

I much prefer the 'warming' part of global warming to the 'cooling' part.

The Heat is On
Whoa, nellie! We are getting an early heat wave. Forecast highs for the next four days are: 95, 95, 95, and 90. I wonder if we will hit these numbers or not. Past personal observations point to that when we get our first heat wave of the year, temperatures usually miss the mark by a few degrees.

I am also awaiting the first blaming of this on global warming; especially since heat waves never happened before 01/20/01. We very well may set record high temperatures so I wonder what they called it, for example, when today's record high of 98 was set in 1925?

I am also reminded of how I use regional cold spells as proof that global warming is not happening. But when some blowhard uses a regional heat wave to prove global warming, it's taken as absolute proof. Never mind that we are both using the same test subject in the sample. Claims by the global warming zealots are always taken as truth, no matter how selective the data is.

Also, this will be fun to see people wither and melt and blast their a/c and then complain about how much a gallon of gasoline, or energy in general, costs. Our air conditioner is still wrapped in the winterizing plastic and I have no plans on unsealing it. I will, however, take the room air conditioner down from the attic and put it in the kids' room. I can take the heat but one year-olds need to be babied. Too bad so many adults need to be babied too.

Eat Me
...or maybe I'll eat you. I guess it all depends on who's hungrier. Once again proving that America is the only nation on earth where a person with an IQ of 43 can become a billionaire, quintessential nutjob Ted Turner believes that Global Warming will cause humans to resort to cannibalism. When they passed out the Global Warming Kool-Aid, some said no thanks, some took a drink, and Ted drank about three gallons and asked for more. What a maroon.

It is scary that a person with wealth and influence actually believes something like this.

It some ways, however, listening to Ted should inspire all Americans. After all, if he can make it big, certainly anyone else can. Ted has certainly proved that being stupid is not a hindrance to success*. However, if becoming successful means becoming a loon like Ted, I would hope most Americans would say: "No thanks; being rational and intelligent is more important than fame and fortune."

*Most celebrities have proved this too.
