Numbers
0 - number of vacation plans we had to alter this summer because of gas prices. We went to Canada and DC/Virginia. We also went camping, the shore, went to Musikfest, several Iron Pigs games, and I went to the Reading Air Show.

2 - number of times this summer I paid more than $4 for a gallon of gas; both involved our trip to Canada. We bought just enough over the border to cover the trip back into the US. We paid $1.249/L in Canada and $4.17/G off I-81 near Watertown, NY. The stations all near my house never topped $3.99.

5 - when I went to donate blood last week, I found out I had passed the 5 gallon plateau.

7 - number of Iron Pigs games I went to this summer. Their record in those seven games: 0-7.

7.3 - Unemployment rate in Illinois, BHO's home state. Unemployment in AZ is 5.1%.

8 - Micheal Phelps; simply amazing; proof that hard work and determination yield results.

14 - the over/under number, in seconds, after the Olympics end how long it will take someone from the MSM to blame Bush if China finishes with more medals than the US. However, it looks like China will finish with more gold so you'll see some BDS in action regardless.

21 - number of plants in my garden; 12 tomato, four jalapeno, four anaheim chili, and one pumpkin. Plus, I have two rogue tomato that popped up and have tomatoes on them. I planted 11 sunflowers but the deer got some so I ended up with four.

26 - number of pounds down since January I was at my morning weigh-in today. I continue to exercise daily and watch my diet but I am not losing weight as quickly as before. Maybe am building muscle.

162 - number of 90F+ days recorded at Chicago's Midway Airport from 2000-2008: "the fewest 90-degree temperatures in the opening nine years of any decade on record here since 1930"

571 - number of miles since April I have biked according to the cycle computer. It broke three weeks ago so I am likely close to 700 by now. My goal is 1000 from April through September.

It helps that he (literally) swims like a dolphin by nature, according to biologists

That's just an airport

His training regimen is 5 hours a day, six days a week. I think to be an Olympian in many sports, 5 hours a day might be the average.

No region is too big nor too small to feel the wrath of AGW.

Yes, but not everything in his success is a result of determination alone. He has literally superhuman ability. When I started getting good at math, it was not only because of effort, but also because I'm innately good at it, generally speaking. That's not the case for everyone.

I hope you're kidding.

Yes, an oft-studied subject - some people ARE naturally good at things - be it physical or mental/intelligence. When someone is naturally talented, it's good to see them apply it in a positive way, be it sports or science.

However, an average person with determination and with hard work can outdo those who are naturally good at some things. You'll likely meet some in college - a smart guy who just doesn't apply himself and ends up dropping out. I knew a few myself. 15-20 years out of college, you'll likely encounter someone who you thought would never "make it" or maybe just be surprised that he has become a loving father or maybe something like an attorney. You never know.

Sometimes.

I am unlikely to outdo him.

...just don't get yourself drawn into a duel. lol

Let me clarify: since an overwhelming majority of people are not gifted, the hard work and determination route is generally a safe bet.

It's a better gambit than many, but still fails pretty regularly.

...and Katrina was just one hurricane. Seeing a polar bear floating on a piece of ice is just one bear in one picture. Sure, Midway is just one airport, but mass movements often have dubious origins. Forecast local low tonight is 48F and we haven't seen a 90F degree day since July 20. Eighteen days in August have been below average in temperature (accuweather.com). Uh-oh, that makes two airports on the list...

torsten
Yes, but the average temperature of the Earth is rising, not falling or remaining steady. That is a well-documented fact and I'm surprised you're still trying to contradict it.

It will cool again soon enough which, of course, will be blamed on global warming. A classic move with a hint of Orwell. Emmanuel Goldstein must have had carbon footprint 3x the size of Al Gore's.

torsten
Al Gore's hypocritical behavior has nothing to do with the steadily increasing average temperature of the Earth, which will not reverse soon.

Granted, the average will probably level off at some point, but not before (continuing to) cause significant damage.
